Privacy Policy
Readiary is built to help you remember your reading life — not to harvest or sell it. We collect as little as possible, keep your reading data yours, and we never sell your personal information. 💛
Who we are
Readiary ("Readiary," "we," "us") is a reading-life tracking app operated by Readiary, based in the United States. You can reach us anytime at hello@getreadiary.com.
What information Readiary handles
1. The reading content you create.Books you add, reading status and progress, ratings, your "Book Memory" entries (feelings, quotes, what a book meant to you), journal entries, reading sessions, lists, wishlists, and goals. You choose what to enter.
2. Photos you take with "Snap a Quote" and the barcode scanner. When you photograph a page to capture a quote, the text is read on your own device. The photo you choose to keep is then stored with that book in private storage on your account, so the quote and its page reach your other devices; only you can open it, and deleting the quote (or removing the photo from it) deletes the image. If you don't save anything, nothing is kept. The barcode scanner reads the code on your device and uses only the resulting book identifier (ISBN) to look up details; barcode images are never stored.
3. Account information. When you create an account, we (through our infrastructure provider) process your email addressand a securely stored password so you can sign in and sync your library across your devices. If you choose to use Readiary without an account, we don't collect an email or password from you.
4. Basic technical information. Like most apps, our hosting and infrastructure providers may automatically process limited technical data (such as device/browser type and IP address) to deliver and secure the service. We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not sell this information.
Where your data is stored
In your account (cloud sync).When you're signed in, your reading data is stored securely with our database provider (Supabase, a Postgres database with per-user access controls) and synced across your devices, so your library is durable and available everywhere. Each user can access only their own data.
On your device. If you use Readiary without signing in, your library and memories are saved locally in your own browser/device storageand aren't synced. Clearing your browser data or removing the app can erase them, so we recommend using the in-app "Back up my reading life" export to keep your own copy.
How we use your information
- Provide the core features — tracking your reading, saving memories and quotes, showing your stats and recaps.
- Sync your library across your devices (when you've created an account).
- Look up book details and cover art (see "Third-party services").
- Respond to you when you contact support.
- Keep the service secure, fix problems, and improve how Readiary works.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for third-party advertising.
Third-party services
- Google Books and Open Library — to find book details, page counts and cover art, Readiary sends titles, authors, or ISBNs to their public APIs.
- Anthropic — Plus recommendations only. When you ask for suggestions, we send the genres and authors you read most and the titles you rated highly, so they can be turned into picks. We do not send your name, email, diary entries, quotes or photos.
- Book retailers / affiliate partners (Bookshop.org, Libro.fm, Amazon)— when you tap a "Shop"/"Buy" link, you're taken to that retailer's site. They may set their own cookies, and Readiary may earn a small commission on purchases at no extra cost to you. We do not share your reading data with them.
- Hosting & database infrastructure (e.g., Netlify, Supabase) — to serve the app and store your synced account data securely.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party sites and encourage you to review their policies.
Speaking a thought (app)
In the mobile app you can speak a thought instead of typing it. The words are turned into text on your phone: the audio is never recorded to a file, never leaves your device, and never reaches us. Only the words you keep are saved, the same as anything you type.
Notifications (app)
If you turn notifications on, your device gives us a notification token so we can send reminders and the gentle "on this day" note. It identifies the device, not you, and it is removed when you turn notifications off or sign out.
Affiliate links
Some book links in Readiary are affiliate links. If you buy through them, Readiary may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you, and Bookshop.org and Libro.fm purchases also help support independent bookstores. These links work through cookies set by those retailers when you visit them — they don't give those retailers access to your Readiary data.
Cookies and tracking
The Readiary app itself does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. It stores data locally on your device to make the app work (for example, your library and settings). Third-party sites you choose to visit may set their own cookies under their policies.
Your choices and rights
- Access & export. Export your full reading data anytime via Settings → Back up my reading life.
- Delete. Clear your data from your device, or request deletion of your account and synced data by emailing hello@getreadiary.com.
- Correct. Edit or remove any book, memory, or entry directly in the app.
- Regional rights. Depending on where you live (e.g., GDPR in the EU/UK or CCPA in California), you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of your information. Email hello@getreadiary.comand we'll respond as required by law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Data security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including per-user access controls on cloud-synced data. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard your reading life and keep our practices privacy-first.
Children's privacy
Readiary is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact hello@getreadiary.comand we'll delete it.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as you use Readiary or as needed to provide the service. Locally stored data remains until you clear it; cloud-synced data remains until you delete it or your account.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Readiary grows. We'll revise the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, aim to notify you within the app.
